  • AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) deep cycle batteries stand out from other deep cycle batteries due to their unique construction. Unlike traditional flooded lead-acid batteries (i.e. vehicle starting batteries), AGM batteries use a fibreglass mat separator to immobilise the electrolyte. This means that the internal battery acid is absorbed and trapped within the mat (forming a bot like a GEL), preventing spills or leaks even if the battery is tipped or inverted. This spill-proof design allows for more flexibility in battery installation as they can be mounted in various orientations without the risk of electrolyte leakage.

Being a Deep Cycle Battery, they are ideally suited to Slow, Low Output power (as opposed to a car starting battery that’s designed for fast High Output). And whilst they can be charged quickly, it is more healthy to charge an AGM deep cycle battery low & slowly!

AGM batteries are ideal for use in with Camping, Caravanning & 4WD adventurers, as well as boats, and off-grid solar systems where constant movement or rough terrain may be encountered (they’re super strong). Additionally, they’re maintenance-free, eliminating the need for periodic topping up of electrolyte, and they can accept higher charging currents, resulting in faster charging times compared to flooded batteries.

Overall, AGM deep cycle batteries provide a reliable and hassle-free power solution for a wide range of applications!

What are the advantages of AGM deep cycle batteries?

Maintenance Free Design

AGM deep cycle batteries are sealed and therefore maintenance-free, as they do not require regular topping up of electrolyte like flooded lead-acid batteries. Being sealed gives you more options with how you mount them.

Vibration & shock Resistant

The immobilised electrolyte in AGM batteries (due to internal fibreglass matting) makes them more resistant to vibration, and also making them more suitable for use in vehicles or equipment subjected to rougher terrain or movement.

Value For money

When it comes to installing AGM Deep Cycle batteries into the likes of a caravan, 4WD or camper trailer, we’re often installing up to 3 or 4 at once and that can be costly. Compared to the likes of lithium for example, AGM deep cycle batteries are a lot more affordable!

How long do AGM deep cycle batteries last?

Extending Your AGM Battery Life

Extending your AGM deep cycle battery life is really quite simple, here are some tips on how you can action this!

  • To discharge a battery, basically means to draw or take power out of it.

Constantly discharging an AGM battery to lower levels accelerates its deterioration, resulting in a shortened lifespan and fewer charge cycles.

The optimal approach to prolonging the life of an AGM deep cycle battery is to minimise deep battery power depletion and maintain a constant, full charge whenever possible.

Note: This highlights why asking a question such as, 'How long can that fridge run on a battery?' may not always provide the complete picture. Equally important is understanding how much power needs replacing to sustain it. For instance, 'While I know the battery can power my fridge for 3 days, how much power do I need to replenish, say, with solar power, to maintain continuous operation?’

  • Nothing deteriorates an AGM deep cycle battery faster than prolonged periods of inactivity without recharging. When left unused, batteries naturally discharge, losing power to the extent that they may become irreversibly discharged and unable to be revived.

A common scenario illustrating this is an AGM battery installed in a caravan left idle for months. This situation compounds when:

    • Caravan owners deplete the battery during a trip and store it without recharging for future use.

    • AGM batteries rely on solar charging from the caravan's rooftop, and when stored under cover o, a carport or garage, they receive no incoming charge.

Note: To mitigate this, it's advisable to install a permanent 240-volt charger in your caravan, ensuring a constant trickle charge when it's not in use. Additionally, periodically drawing a small load from the battery, such as a 12-volt fridge, can help maintain its health and is beneficial for the appliance as well

Lifespan of an AGM Deep Cycle Battery

The life of a battery is mostly quoted in years, BUT… in actual fact it is all about the amount of Charge Cycles the AGM deep cycle battery experiences.

  • Imagine your battery is like a water tank. Using electricity is like pouring water out of the tank, and recharging is like filling it back up. A charge cycle is the process of draining some water (using electricity) from the tank and then refilling it (recharging) to its full level. This process can be done multiple times before the tank (battery) starts to lose its ability to hold as much water (electricity)

  • The number of charge cycles a deep cycle battery can endure varies depending on several factors, including battery chemistry, depth of discharge, temperature, and maintenance practices. On average, an AGM deep cycle battery can handle around 1000 charge cycles, with some variability of.500 charge cycles either side. By taking proper care, such as avoiding deep discharges and conducting regular maintenance, you can significantly extend the battery's lifespan and the number of charge cycles it can endure.

Battery Maintenance

Battery maintenance is crucial for ensuring optimal performance, longevity, and safety of your power storage system.

  • Periodically inspect the battery corrosion buildup on the terminals. If corrosion is detected, clean the terminals using a mixture of baking soda and water, ensuring they are thoroughly dry before reconnecting.

Disclaimer: Prior to cleaning an AGM deep cycle battery, it's crucial to prioritise safety by using all necessary protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection, to prevent potential exposure to acid or other hazardous substances

  • Use a charger specifically designed for AGM batteries to avoid potential damage from high voltage or current output.

Avoid Over-Discharge: Regularly discharging AGM batteries below 50% of their capacity can significantly reduce their lifespan.

Charge Regularly: After each use or when the state of charge drops below 50%, recharge the battery promptly. Regular charging helps preserve the capacity and performance of AGM batteries.

Monitor State of Charge: Utilise a battery monitor or voltmeter to keep track of the battery's state of charge. Ideally, AGM batteries should be maintained between 50% and 100% state of charge for optimal longevity.

What are the signs of a failing AGM deep cycle battery?

Reduced Capacity

AGM deep cycle batteries are designed for sustained power delivery over extended periods, making them ideal for applications like renewable energy storage, caravans, camper trailers, boats, and four wheel drives. When these batteries start to fail, one of the first signs is a noticeable decrease in their capacity to hold a charge. You may find that the battery doesn't provide as much power as it once did, leading to shorter run times for your devices or systems.

Decreased Performance

AGM deep cycle batteries are crucial for powering demanding equipment like electric trolling motors. As a deep cycle battery approaches the end of its lifespan, you may observe a decline in its performance. For instance, in an RV or boat, you might notice that the battery struggles to sustain power for appliances or the likes of an electric boat motor, resulting in intermittent operation or reduced functionality.

Physical Signs

Visual inspection of the AGM deep cycle battery can reveal telltale signs of impending failure. Look for any bulging or swelling in the battery casing, which could indicate internal pressure buildup or damage to the internal components. Additionally, check for signs of leakage around the terminals or along the edges of the battery. If you notice excessive heat emanating from the battery during charging or operation, it could signal internal problems such as overcharging or a short circuit.
