AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) deep cycle batteries stand out from other deep cycle batteries due to their unique construction. Unlike traditional flooded lead-acid batteries (i.e. vehicle starting batteries), AGM batteries use a fibreglass mat separator to immobilise the electrolyte. This means that the internal battery acid is absorbed and trapped within the mat (forming a bot like a GEL), preventing spills or leaks even if the battery is tipped or inverted. This spill-proof design allows for more flexibility in battery installation as they can be mounted in various orientations without the risk of electrolyte leakage.
Being a Deep Cycle Battery, they are ideally suited to Slow, Low Output power (as opposed to a car starting battery that’s designed for fast High Output). And whilst they can be charged quickly, it is more healthy to charge an AGM deep cycle battery low & slowly!
