Battery Maintenance

Battery Charging

During your vehicles servicing, it's advisable to ensure they fully charge your battery each time. As the age-old adage goes, "Prevention is better than the cure." Keeping your battery as close to full capacity as possible and doing so regularly will significantly extend its lifespan.

Avoid Undercharging

Letting your vehicle sit idle and undercharged for extended periods can lead to sulfation, which contributes to power loss and causes enduring harm to your battery. It's important to note that a sulfated battery is not considered a manufacturing fault or defect and will void your warranty. If you intend to leave your vehicle unused for an extended period, it's crucial to remove the battery and ensure it remains charged.

Clean Your Battery

During your vehicle's servicing, it's a wise practice to have the battery terminals cleaned. If you prefer to do this task yourself, a simple process involves using warm soapy water and ensuring thorough drying.

Securely Fasten Your Battery

Always ensure that your battery is securely fastened. Vibrations can potentially damage the battery's plates, significantly reducing its lifespan. Loose battery terminals resulting from excessive vibration can also lead to breakdowns. Regularly inspect and tighten them as needed..

Wet Lead Acid Battery Levels

For traditional Wet Lead Acid batteries, it's essential to maintain their fluid levels by keeping them consistently filled with distilled water, just above the separators and plates inside. Prior to filling, remember to wear the necessary safety gear when working with batteries to guard against acid splashes or spills. To monitor the electrolyte liquid levels, regularly check them (monthly), and promptly clean up any spills.

Listen & Look For Failing Battery Signals

If your automobile engine is sluggish when starting (ie: slow to wind over), & or, you may notice that your cars lights noticeably dim when starting, it’s time to get your battery checked.

Store Batteries Off The Ground

Batteries tend to discharge quicker than usual when stored on concrete ground. If you need to store a battery for a length of time, be sure to store it up off the cooler ground on a timber bench (or the like), & connect it to a trickle charge to keep it from discharging when not in use.

Check Your Vehicles Charge Rate

Under and over-charging will reduce battery life, so have the charge rate checked at every major vehicle service.
